Elian’s British School Pupils Experience a Real Press Conference

School “Journalists” Practise Press Conferences at La Nucía Town Hall

La Nucía, Wednesday 10 December 2025 – Today, Year 5 pupils from Elian’s British School of La Nucía enjoyed a unique experience: becoming councillors and journalists for a few hours in the Plenary Hall of La Nucía Town Hall. The activity forms part of the municipal extracurricular initiative “How is a news story made?”, organised by the Department of Education and the Town Hall’s Communications Office.

The programme began with the pupils attending a real press conference on the 15th Solidarity Christmas Fair, led by Councillor Beatriz Pérez-Hickman. There, they were able to witness the full development of a press conference: the presentation, journalists’ questions, and the photo session.

Afterwards, the pupils took on different roles: some became councillors, others journalists and photographers, presenting the Christmas Fair and asking questions to their classmates. The activity was carried out in two groups so that all pupils could take part and experience first-hand how a press conference works.

The day concluded with the drafting of a press release based on the simulated press conference. The pupils worked on key concepts such as creating engaging headlines, the 6 Ws, prioritising information, and writing a summarising first paragraph. They also selected the photographs from the event and recorded a short audio clip for radio, thus completing the full news creation process.

The aim of “How is a news story made?” is to bring pupils closer to 21st-century journalism in a practical and interactive way, encouraging oral expression, writing skills, critical thinking and the ability to formulate questions. This completely free activity is being carried out for the first time this year with students from Elian’s British School and is open to all educational centres in the municipality.
